Chinese Christian Publications, 1800-1911: An annotated bibliographic database

This database aims to provide the most comprehensive guide currently available to Christian publications in Chinese languages between 1800 and 1911.
Christian publications in Chinese languages (whether authored by missionaries, by missionaries in collaboration with Chinese associates, or by Chinese Christians) covered a wide range of subject areas in addition to religious material. They were not systematically collected by any single mission, and consequently there is no comprehensive repository for these materials. Extant copies are dispersed around the world, and for many titles it is uncertain whether any copies survive. One aim of this database is to assist librarians and researchers in identifying and cataloging such works as new materials come to light.
The core of the database was built by collating all of the available information from the three main Qing-era catalogues of Protestant missionary publications in Chinese languages (abbreviated in this resource as Wylie, 1876, and MacG). That core was supplemented from other lists, and where possible by examination of extant copies of the works listed. Protestant work is more fully represented than Roman Catholic or Orthodox publications. Periodicals are excluded, as are Bibles and Bible portions.
Originally published online in 2013, the database has been updated with a fuller dataset and much more robust search capacities. The 2025 version, which covers 2,500 titles, supports multi-factor Boolean searches and permits downloading of search results.
